The ADI Part 3 Instructional Ability Test is the final stage of qualifying as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). It assesses your ability to deliver safe, effective and client-centred driving instruction while adapting your teaching to meet the individual needs of the learner.

During the test, you’ll deliver a real driving lesson to a genuine learner while a DVSA examiner observes from the rear of the vehicle. Your performance is assessed against 17 competencies across three key areas:

* Lesson planning
* Risk management
* Teaching and learning strategies

The examiner will assess how well you identify the learner’s needs, agree lesson goals, manage risk, encourage independent thinking, adapt your coaching style and help the learner reflect on their own performance.

To pass the test, you must demonstrate that you can deliver a structured, safe and effective lesson while maintaining a positive learning environment and consistently promoting safe driving for life.
